Smith was averaging 14.7 points and 3.7 assists per game since returning from a lengthy absence due to a plantar fascia tear in his left foot, and was benefitting from the Knicks’ other varied injuries. The Cavaliers are similarly besieged by injuries right now, so Smith could have a few games where he gets his feet wet the only way he knows how — by hoisting up lots and lots of contested jumpers.
However, in the long run, Smith is likely to fill a similar role as Dion Waiters did for the Cavs. Though Waiters had a 24.1 percent usage rate prior to his trade, he was averaging just 10.5 points and 2.2 assists per game in 23.8 minutes overall.
